When you finish a scan with Norton's full-scale antivirus, the results page includes a link that says, 'If you think there are still risks, click here.' Doing so launches Norton Power Eraser, installed with the antivirus and described as 'an aggressive repair tool.' But you can download and run Symantec Norton Power Eraser for free, even if you've chosen a different company as your main security software provider.
Like Malwarebytes Free, Norton Power Eraser isn't meant to work alone. You throw it into the mix when your regular antivirus has trouble with a persistent malware attack, or when malware prevents you from even installing a regular antivirus. Symantec points out that this product's aggressive detection could possibly mark legitimate programs for removal, so use it with caution. Note that Norton Power Eraser is a Windows-only tool.
No Install Needed
Norton Power Eraser is a speedy download, and it doesn't require installation. You could keep it on a thumb drive in your pocket, for emergencies. Its main window gets right to business. You can click a button for a quick Unwanted Application Scan. In the unlikely event that the scan damages a legitimate program, you can click another button to undo the latest fix. A third button takes you to a page with advanced scan options.
A note on the Advanced page explains that for most users the basic Unwanted Application Scan should be fine. My thought is that if you're going to bring out the big guns, you should take advantage of all resources by launching a System Scan. The Reputation Scan works a bit differently, checking the files you select against Symantec's Norton Cloud reputation database.
I don't imagine many users will need the Multi-Boot Scan. This scan is aimed at computers with more than one Windows operating system installed, a rare configuration for consumers.
And that's the entirety of Norton Power Eraser. You can scan the system in several ways, and you can undo the effects of the most recent fix.
No Lab Test Scores
All four of the independent testing labs that I follow include Norton in their testing, but what they're testing is Symantec Norton AntiVirus Basic, not Power Eraser. The fact that Norton's aggregate lab score is a decent 8.8 of 10 possible points just has no bearing on how well Power Eraser works.
It's worth noting that in the latest set of tests, Kaspersky Free swept the field, with all perfect scores. And Kaspersky Free is a full-scale antivirus, with real-time protection that's not part of Power Eraser. Bitdefender Antivirus Plus almost equaled Kaspersky's record, but missed by a half-point on one test.
Hands On With Power Eraser
My standard virtual machine test system has dozens of ransomware samples on it, along with hand-modified versions of those samples. It also provides a home for a handful of utilities that I wrote to help with testing. I launched an Unwanted Application Scan just to see what would happen. It finished in just a minute or two. To my surprise, it reported 'No Risks Found.'
Next, I launched a System Scan. This, too, finished quickly. It reported one of my helper programs as Unknown, but it called the rest Bad and offered to remove them. As for the actual malware samples, they were conspicuously absent from the report.
When I fed my folder of samples to the Reputation Scan, things got interesting. This scan flagged 83 percent of the samples for removal. Note, though, that it's not a full system scan. It only checks the files and folders that you give it.
I mentioned that I have another folder containing the same set of samples, but hand-modified. I change the filenames, append zeroes to change the file size, and tweak some non-executable bytes. Not surprisingly, Reputation Scan flagged every single one of them as Unknown, with an option to submit the files to Symantec for analysis. So far, so good.
But Does It Work?
Those scans are interesting, but using them on a system with no active malware isn't a proper test. After all, the point of Power Eraser is to handle active malware infestations that your regular antivirus can't. I can't test this tool exactly as I do regular antivirus tools. Normally I open a folder of samples and note which ones get eliminated by the on-access scan. Then I launch the rest to see whether other forms of real-time malware protection prevent the infestation.
As I did with Malwarebytes, I tested Power Eraser by installing four samples at a time, waiting for them to be fully active, and then running a cleanup scan. In each case, I first ran the Unwanted Application Scan, and in each case, it found nothing. I continued with a full System Scan. The samples don't always install the same collection of components, so I ran my hand-coded checking tool both before and after the cleanup.
At the end of each scan, Power Eraser listed its findings. I had to exempt my checking tool from removal each time before clicking the Fix Now button. Each fix required a reboot, after which Power Eraser ran again to report its success. Based on these reports, and on my checking tool's before and after results, I determined that Power Eraser detected 87 percent of the samples, better than the 65 percent detection exhibited by Malwarebytes. However, as with Malwarebytes, its cleanup was spotty. My Symantec contacts confirmed that it doesn't attempt to clean up most Registry traces. In many cases it left behind executable files. The numerous leftover malware traces earned it an overall score of 7.8 points, with 10 being the maximum. On the same scale, Malwarebytes got 5.5.

Power Eraser's 7.8 point score isn't bad. Yes, with their real-time protection both Norton Antivirus Basic and Webroot SecureAnywhere AntiVirus earned a perfect 10 points. But perfection isn't necessarily the focus with Power Eraser. Rather, it aims to knock out active malware, so your regular antivirus can function correctly and finish the cleanup job.
Can't Help With Ransomware
If a zero-day virus slips past your antivirus and infects your computer's files, it's bad, but you can recover. Once the antivirus company sends an update that handles the brand-new virus, your antivirus can clean up the mess.
The same isn't true of ransomware. A ransomware attack that slips past your antivirus can freely encrypt your precious documents. If the antivirus removes the ransomware a few days later, that's no help. It might even hinder your ability to pay the ransom, should you decide to do so. Power Eraser isn't the tool for ransomware protection.
